Provincial Croquet Competition - Saturday 7th June 2014

Ten teams from five Circles gathered at the Sussex County Croquet Club in Southwick for the fourth Provincial Croquet Competition.

In each round of the competition the teams, each made up of two pairs, play against two pairs from another team over seven hoops. Essentially, two separate 2v2 games are played in parallel. The first player to get their ball through a hoop scores that hoop for their pair. The pair winning most of the seven hoops scoring a point for the team. If both pairs from a team won more hoops than their opponents they would score a 2:0 win.

The team with the most points at the end of five rounds of matches will be awarded the coveted Arthur McKivett Rosebowl. In the event of a tie, the difference between the number of hoops scored for and against the teams is compared.

The Arthur McKivett Rosebowl
Once again, Haywards Heath selected a perfect Saturday on which to hold the Tournament. Despite early jitters as a monsoon swept the county at 09:00, by the time the teams gathered at 11:00 the sun was out and the temperature rising.

There was plenty of opportunity to discuss team tactics over a pint at half time aside from enjoying the splendid buffet.

New name on the trophy:
Provincial President, Des Boksan-Cullen presents the Rosebowl to the Arundel 1 ‘Howards’ team of John McDermott, Valerie MacDermott, Caroline Dunn and Michael Tudor.
On the left is John Goulding of Haywards Heath who did a fantastic job of organising the event.
